Honey producers nightmare: the new 'Biggle' to replace the old 'Dennis'
The next crop of honey producers and consumers won't know their sweetener will be better or more expensive. The changes to the honey supply chain will mean more money in store for honey producers and greater profits for growers.
"I don't know which farmers can afford to buy the latest stuff and who won't be affected," said Alan McLeod, chairman of the New Zealand Apiculture Association.
With the cost of making honey soaring and with producers feeling they were paying less per hectare, farmers and consumers are seeing a higher price for their products.
"There is always uncertainty over what it will be, but with all the uncertainty over the cost of the product you see many farmers saying 'we must do something'," he said.
That makes sense when you consider the amount of money each honey producer will have to invest on top of any other costs. That money could eventually fund research into the honey supply chain and the improvement of honey production and processing technologies.
Cultivar is at the centre of the debate about who will benefit most from the new pricing system.
The industry group, Cattle Council of NZ, warned last year the changes were "extremely expensive" and called for a re-evaluation of current market conditions.
There are many aspects to honey production including processing, farming and storage.
This week's change of price points to $10 a hectare will raise it up to $35-$40 a hectare in many places. Farmers in south Canterbury, for example, will see a hike of nearly 20 per cent from $15 to $20 a hectare to make up the difference.
"If this price move continues on for the next 10 years it will put our industry into question," said Andrew Taylor, chairman of the NZ Apiculture Association's New Zealand Division.
"Farmers will be left with high costs and huge costs to produce honey that are going to be lost over time, as they struggle to make the same money again. It will cause financial problems for some of the businesses in the industry.
"And our export value of food for human consumption will be impacted as the value of the raw materials in the Australian commodity basket declines as farmers cannot sell their products overseas, not because there is an immediate economic impact to us, but because the impact of these prices will slow trade at a time when we are in a trade surplus and therefore not able to compete effectively with high quality markets in many parts of the world."
And while many may be able to keep their $5-billion-plus honey businesses afloat, others will be struggling.
