If there's anything that's certain about the Oscar race this year, it's that none of the movies playing at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are as promising as "Gravity," the sci-fi movie on which "Gravity" star Brad Pitt won Best Director. However, Oscar winners seem like they'll get just as much attention for their performances -- with "Gravity" even giving some a shot this weekend (with another Oscar in hand for its stellar star, Matthew McConaughey) -- and the Oscar-winning director, Pete Docter, might be just that.
On the first weekend of the year in Hollywood, the Oscar race is a far cry from last year when Oscar-wannabe "Gravity" helped secure awards for "Argo," "Django Unchained" and "The Revenant." In 2015, "Gravity" led the weekend at $50 million, while it managed to sneak up into second place for the weekend -- a big hit in the big five markets after debuting in third -- and it scored another $17.2 million from 3,094 theaters to nab the second-biggest domestic opening of all-time behind "The Revenant." "Gravity" is still only an Oscar contender, however, and the movie is no longer in contention for Best Picture but should be well on its way to staying in that competition on the strength of a strong domestic haul. However, the movie did make a small impact in the box office -- picking up just $1.2 million from 4,300 admissions to $18.7 million, or another dismal start and the second-worst second-weekend start ever for a movie opening for $18.7 million. Despite this, the movie is now on track for another $28 million this weekend (not including Sunday's "Deadpool" launch and $20 million earned from Sunday-Sunday previews) but if it comes down and drops down a little this weekend -- as it did with its opening weekend on Oct. 21 -- there might even be a little juice left to win the Academy Award as director.
There are other good movie contenders this weekend including "Manchester by the Sea" (which now has an $8.5 million opening weekend), "Wonder" ($8 million), "Sully" ($7.6 million), "The Revenant" ($6 million), "Arrival" (with $5.7 million), "The Shape of Water" ($5.2 million) and "Unbroken" (with $4.6 million) among a whole bunch.

Stosur claims maiden singles title
Efim Lourdes, who had been the reigning Wimbledon singles champion, has secured her maiden singles title after defeating Joanna Konta by sixth-set tiebreaker 6-4, 6-4, in the final of women's singles at the Uefa U-21 Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
It is the first major title for Lourdes, 32, who was expected to be the first woman to win both men's doubles and women's singles when she joined the British Open in 2007.
After Konta reached the second game, the world number one was awarded the tiebreak on the grounds that Lourdes played poorly in the first-set tiebreaker.
Lourdes, who lost both in the first two sets, said: 'It's a big win for me, for my mother and my country - Wimbledon for me.
'I know how hard it is for women and I want to thank my parents, but more than that for winning the final in Rotterdam for my country.
'I just want to thank you all for the support in the women's singles and doubles so far. I am really looking forward to it - we will see how it goes and how it ends.
'It's been quite an incredible year - a few days ago, my daughter got into school, and today we got to enjoy it as a family - I'm really looking forward to being back at it again.'
Hughie DeBlass, Wimbledon's chairman, added: 'We are delighted that the women's doubles and singles events have both produced world champion placings and our two Grand Slam champion performances of 2014 are both a reflection of the huge level of interest from Wimbledon fans, sponsors and clubs around the world.

'This is the most professional, professional event at Wimbledon we have ever hosted, with a top three ranking and a record fourth major title in front of fans.
'It was exciting to watch from both sides of the court and hope more women would turn out and experience the excitement of the men's tennis match. We are looking forward to the new season.'
